Sea Dragon is a brush painting of a water dragon in the traditional Chinese "Gongbi" style with watercolor on rice paper.
In China, calligraphy always belongs to the painting. It’s like the signature from the artist. The bigger characters are always the title of the painting. The smaller calligraphy shows the name of the artist and sometimes where and when the painting was created.
On the picture is written „Shuǐ lóng - bái jié huà yú zhōng guó nán jīng” which means “Sea Dragon - painted by Bai Jie in Nanjing”
Bai Jie is my Chinese name.
The dragon is deeply rooted in Chinese culture as the supreme auspicious being. And the Chinese often regard themselves as "the descendants of the dragon".
In ancient China, dragons were the symbol of imperial power and represented the emperor.
Nowadays, it symbolizes power, nobility, honor, luck, success, and fortune.
It is also the fifth of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals. The year of the water dragon was 2012.
The original is mounted in traditional style as silk scroll.
